Todd Smith will be Taking over Education Portfolio

Premier of Ontario Doug Ford is reorganizing his cabinet to include positions in energy and education as the legislature prepares for summer vacation. After serving as minister of education since 2019, Stephen Lecce switches to the ministry of energy, taking over from Todd Smith, a Bay of Quinte MPP who has held the position for the previous three years.

Along with the creation of new associate minister posts and the division of several other ministries, including Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, several new members of the cabinet have been elevated. That makes 36 persons in the cabinet.

The son of the former premier, Mike Harris, is one of the new faces in cabinet as he assumes responsibility for Red Tape Reduction. Among those who are remaining put are the ministers of colleges and universities, health, finance, municipal affairs, and housing. David Piccini, the Member for Peterborough South in Northumberland, is still the Minister of Labor, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development.

Since June 18, 2021, Canadian politician Todd Andrew Smith MPP has served as Ontario’s minister of energy. Prior to serving as the Bay of Quinte representative in the Provincial Parliament from 2011 to 2018, he was the Prince Edward—Hastings representative. Smith was named Minister of Energy on June 18, 2021. Smith was the energy critic for the Official Opposition from 2015 to 2018, before to the election of the Doug Ford government, therefore he is familiar with this matter.

In her capacity as Minister of Energy, Smith oversaw the launch of the Ontario Business Costs Rebate Program, which would reduce energy expenses for companies affected by public health measures, as well as other programs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.Smith also announced the launch of a new Green Button standard to increase energy consumer transparency, the first small modular reactor on a Canadian grid, and guidance to the Independent Electricity System Operator for future electricity procurement to guarantee adequate resource availability.
