Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology (MBCET) is one such College, which is situated on the picturesque Mar Ivanios Vidyanagar campus, within the limits of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. It is a true destination for quality education with values embedded. The variety of institutions of Higher Education in the same fortified campus, governed by the Major Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram of the Malankara Syrian Catholic Church, are working synergistically for the betterment of the society and the Nation at large. The College is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and has been affiliated with the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University since 2015.

Journey so far

MBCET began its journey in 2002. Within the irst two decades, the number of Programmes offered by the College has increased to fourteen, and the growth was driven by the vision of global standing. Over the course of time, the College has attained the stature needed to become an Autonomous Institution. The College was conferred with Autonomous Status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in July 2020, and the same was notified by the affiliating APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University in September 2020. The College secured accreditation by NAAC in 2016 with an A Grade and a CGPA of 3.13 out of 4.

MBCET also got accreditation for five B.Tech Programmes of CE, CS, EC, EE and ME from the National Board of Accreditation in 2016 and every three years since then.

There has been consistently high enrolment in all the Programmes. The newly started UG programme of CS(AI) and Electrical and Computer Engineering also attracted very good enrolment in 2022.

The seven Mtech specializations have the latest curriculum. It includes internships and industry-designed electives. Similar to the leading Institutions of National importance, the second year is earmarked for Project Work. Students can work on the Projects assigned by the Industries so that they can start earning very early.

Establishment

Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology (MBCET) was established by the Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum and is administered through the Malankara Catholic Educational Society. The Church has also ventured into the specialized areas of Higher Education such as Medical Science, Life Science, Law and Management. The campus provides an ideal milieu for academic pursuits of any verdant mind. For a quick outing, one can find the beaches around as a first choice or the hillocks for trekking as the next best option.

Aesthetically designed buildings in eleven blocks spread over the campus have a total built-up area of over 36000 Sq.m. An eco-friendly infrastructure concept has been executed on the campus. Rainwater harvesting, Solar energy, and waste management have been implemented right from the inception of the Institution. Each block is connected by Pedestrian Bridge, retaining the original topography, while the separate entity of each branch of Engineering studies is ensured; the recreation areas and Library are centrally located. The College enjoys a high reputation and is a Research Centre of the University for UG, PG and PhD research.

Programmes

The College offers various Graduate and Postgraduate Programmes.

The following B. Tech Programmes have an intake of 60 each:

  • Computer Science and Engineering (Artificial Intelligence) (2022)
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering (2022)
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2002)
  • Mechanical Engineering(2005).

The B.Tech Programmes, namely Electronics and Communication Engineering (2002), Computer Science and Engineering(2002) and Civil Engineering(2005), have an intake of 120 each since 2014.

A variety of MTech Programmes are offered by the College, and each MTech Programme has an intake of 18. These are:

  • Computer Science and Engineering (2012)
  • IoT and Sensor Systems (2022)
  • Machine Design (2012)
  • Power Control and Drives (2012)
  • Structural Engineering (2012)
  • Telecommunication Engineering (2012)
  • Transportation Engineering (2022).

Strengths

Transitioning to an Autonomous Institute was one of the prime visions of the College, which it could achieve within the span of 20 years from the beginning. Being an Autonomous Institute, the strength of the academics come from the frequent or requirement-based revision of the curriculum and syllabi of the College. The College has proximity to a number of leading R&D Institutions and the Technopark Trivandrum, and hence there is a very favourable ecosystem that fosters high-quality education.

There is also an on-campus IEDC Maker Space, Intel® Unnati Lab, ASAP Hightech Training Lab, High-Performance Computing Facility, Digital Library and Campus Wi-Fi. Green and Clean Campus Awards conferred by AICTE and ISTE was also the plus points.

Mission

The mission of the College is ‘to transform the Youth as technically competent, ethically sound and socially committed Professionals by providing a vibrant learning ambience for the welfare of humanity.’

Goals

The College aims to achieve the integral development of human personality to ensure the possibility of living a life with its full glory. It endeavours to contribute to placing value-driven human beings at the centre of the Universe in the New Millennium, ensuring the creative use of Science and Technology in the context of a techno-centric life and sustainable development.

Patron

Moran Mor Baselios, Cardinal Catholicos and Major Archbishop of Trivandrum is the Patron of the College. As the President of the Malankara Catholic Educational Society, under which the College functions, he executes the administration through the Governing Body of the College. He says, “We wish to reach out to all sections of our society without the distinction of gender, caste, religion or creed. In short, Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology is envisaged to be a glaring example of the philosophy of education and the apostolate of Human Resource Development, which the Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum has been pursuing for the last eight decades.”

Internships and Schemes

For the MTech Programmes, internships are mandatory. For the B.Tech also, the College encourages Industry Internships so that the student can be helped in securing the placement from the campus itself. The college has also set up the AI IoT Lab under the Intel® Unnati Scheme and is imparting training on the Intel® platforms for developing the student workforce who can work on the IoT systems. The other well-furnished laboratories cater to the needs of instructions as well as the various projects and co-curricular, extra curricular, scholarships, etc.
