The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) in the United Arab Emirates has appointed Dr. David A. Schmidt as its new President. Dr. Schmidt brings a wealth of experience in academic leadership, having served as President of the American University in Dubai (AUD) and worked in various academic leadership roles at different institutions, including the University of Wisconsin System.
During his tenure at AUD, Dr. Schmidt successfully navigated the university through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, oversaw the institution’s re-accreditation by SACSCOC (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges), and implemented enrollment strategies that led to increased student enrollment.
Dr. Schmidt expressed his enthusiasm for joining AURAK during a transformative period in higher education and emphasized the need for an engaged and collaborative approach to address the changing landscape. His extensive experience and multicultural background make him well-suited to lead AURAK in fostering international learning and collaboration.
A “global nomad” who has worked and studied at multiple universities in various countries, Dr. Schmidt holds a Ph.D. from Saint Louis University and has a track record of leadership in international education and experience.
He succeeds Professor Hassan Hamdan Al Alkim as President of AURAK, following Al Alkim’s distinguished decade-long tenure at the university.
