Telford College has been nationally recognized for its exceptional support of students with severe learning difficulties. The college’s Willow Tree Centre, located at the Wellington campus, has received a Certificate of Excellence in the Pearson National Teaching Awards, often referred to as the ‘Oscars’ of the education sector.
Emma McCartney, a receptionist who has been with the Willow Tree Centre for four years, was also honored with a certificate for her outstanding dedication. The Pearson Awards, organized by The Teaching Awards Trust, celebrate the impact of educators across the UK and highlight the important work being done in the education sector.
Kimberley Gunter, manager of the Willow Tree Centre, nominated Emma for the unsung hero award. She said, “I am immensely proud of her work. Emma consistently places others before herself and is undeniably a super unsung hero. She consistently surpasses the expectations of her role, showing an unwavering commitment to supporting both staff and students.”
Every morning, Emma greets students, parents, and carers with infectious enthusiasm. Her dedication includes helping with bursary applications, enrolment documents, bus pass applications, and grant forms, all while reflecting the college’s vision, mission, aims, and values with professionalism.
In addition to her usual duties, Emma prepares digital newsletters to provide parents and carers with updates on their young person’s activities. Her excellent communication skills are evident as she takes extra time to support parents, addressing their concerns and providing reassurance by answering their questions.
