What inspired you to pursue a career as a personal and business growth coach and leadership consultant?

My journey to becoming a person of service was a long road filled with obstacles and challenges. In the first decade of my career, I worked in global corporations where I experienced management styles that treated people as mere tools to achieve goals. This impersonal approach never sat right with me.

In the next decade, I started my own company, experiencing both failures and remarkable successes. These experiences taught me the importance of authenticity in any business environment.

My personal therapy journey also played a crucial role, helping me understand personal drivers and behavior change, which ultimately motivated me to help others. This professional and personal growth combination inspired me to become a coach and consultant.

Can you share a defining career moment that shaped your leadership and team development approach?

A defining moment for me was realizing that while one-on-one coaching was fulfilling, my clients often returned to toxic work environments, hindering their progress. I worked with an HR director who left her corporate position to build an HR division in an emerging IT security company. Her new boss micromanaged her, and she constantly felt like her 15 years of expertise were unappreciated.

Even for an experienced professional, it was challenging not to be overwhelmed by her conflicting emotions. This affected her leadership development because it was like taking two steps forward and one step back.

This highlighted the intense impact of group dynamics and made me understand that to help individuals thrive, I also needed to focus on transforming their work environments. Seeing the positive changes when I addressed individual and team needs solidified my leadership and team development approach.

How do your personal experiences and background influence your coaching and consulting style?

Growing up in a multilingual, multicultural family has deeply influenced my coaching style. My South African Father—with his British heritage—was a traveling trapeze artist, and my Hungarian Mother worked across Europe. This diverse background taught me to be open to different cultural, cognitive and emotional perspectives.

My therapeutic journey, which included three years of co-facilitating personality development workshops, enhanced my ability to understand and express emotions. These experiences emphasize the importance of honest introspection, a key element in my coaching methodology.

Balancing business goals with mental health begins with aligning personal and workplace values. When this alignment isn’t possible, separating your identity from your work persona is crucial.

Understanding that your worth is not tied to performance reviews is critical to maintaining mental well-being. Focusing on this separation, my clients can better manage stress and maintain a healthier work-life balance, leading to more sustainable success.

Instead of listing specific values, I focus on helping clients and teams realize their potential. Using Carl Rogers’s methodology, I emphasize empathy, non-judgmental feedback and building trust. I believe everyone deserves a trusted, unbiased mirror to see their true capabilities. I help clients and teams unlock their full potential by fostering an environment of understanding and support.

How do you stay motivated and inspired in your role as a coach and consultant?

Seeing small positive shifts in my clients’ behavior keeps me motivated. These changes lead to improved work life, enhanced self-esteem and self-acknowledgment. During feedback sessions, witnessing clients list their progress and often become emotional reaffirms the impact of my work.

Frequently, my clients thank me for the skills they learned and their newfound compassion toward themselves. Knowing I’ve helped someone build a better relationship with themselves and their work environment is incredibly rewarding.

What strategies do you use to foster trust and commitment within the teams you work with?

I foster trust by creating a safe environment for teams to be transparent about their internal dynamics. Conflicts usually stem from ignorance and a lack of empathy, not bad intentions. By helping individuals understand the impact of their behavior and practicing clear communication, I promote inclusion and camaraderie. It’s about creating a space where everyone feels heard and valued, leading to more substantial team commitment.

How do you personalize your coaching approach to suit the unique needs of each client and organization?

Personalizing my coaching approach starts with a thorough assessment. I conduct one-on-one and team interviews to understand the structure and people within it. By understanding their personalities deeply, I can tailor bespoke solutions that promote behavioral evolution, benefiting the entire organization.

This detailed approach ensures that the solutions are practical and sustainable in the long run. This process does take longer, but the effects last longer and compound throughout the years.

Continuous learning is essential in my profession. I have an experienced coach for supervision sessions, which are invaluable for my growth. Engaging with colleagues and professionals from various fields keeps my perspective fresh.

For example, I’m currently attending a Leading Organizations & Change course at MIT-Sloan to stay updated on new frameworks. This constant pursuit of knowledge helps me offer my clients the latest insights and techniques.

How do you integrate your focus on emotional intelligence into your coaching sessions?

I integrate emotional intelligence into my coaching by emphasizing self-awareness, empathy and effective communication. I help clients understand their emotions, connect with others and manage stress through reflective exercises, role-playing and mindfulness techniques.

This approach enhances leadership skills and fosters personal growth and resilience. By focusing on emotional intelligence, my clients can create positive and productive environments.

Looking forward, what are your aspirations and goals, and how do you plan to achieve them?

I’ve just finished my first book, exploring 21 real-life case studies of leadership challenges in service-based organizations and how to overcome them. Distribution starts at the end of August.

I aim to create more books based on proven methods to help team leaders and decision-makers manage their people. I’m continuing to advocate the importance of self-knowledge as the foundation for growing as a human.

My mission is to educate managers that personal development within business frameworks is crucial for a future-proof and well-functioning organization. By sharing these insights, I hope to inspire more leaders to focus on personal growth alongside professional development.

What advice would you give someone looking to enhance their leadership skills and team dynamics within their organization?

My advice is to prioritize self-awareness and then learn and practice genuine empathy. Be brave enough to share your vulnerabilities with your team to encourage open dialogue and active listening. This instantly builds trust and understanding.

Additionally, invest in continuous learning and development, embrace feedback and foster a culture of collaboration and support. These steps will help you build a more cohesive and effective team. However, principles, frameworks and tools alone cannot provide long-lasting positive shifts.
