Professor Sarah Young Appointed as New Dean of Science by University of Auckland

Professor Sarah Young

Professor Sarah Young will join Waipapa Taumata Rau from the University of Canterbury. The University has named a Dean of Science to replace Professor John Hosking, who is retiring.

Professor Sarah Young, the current executive dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Canterbury and a member of the senior leadership team, is the new Dean of Science.

Professor Young previously served as Head of the School of Medical Sciences at the University of Sydney, as well as Deputy Dean of the Dunedin School of Medicine at the University of Otago.

Professor Dawn Freshwater, Vice-Chancellor of the University, expressed her joy with the appointment. Professor Young, who received her PhD in Immunology from the University of Otago in 2000, is the current chair of the Institute of Environmental Science and Research and a board member of the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation.

In addition to her leadership skills, Professor Young has extensive experience in education and curriculum development, having recently overseen a review of the University of Canterbury’s BSc and MSc curricula.

According to Professor Young, the Faculty of Science will have numerous prospects in the future.

“I consider it a joy to be able to oversee such an amazing and diverse faculty. I’m excited to work with the kaimahi and tauira and continue to create a collegial and supportive academic climate that values excellence.”

Professor Young will begin her new post in October and will return to Auckland with her family and two dogs at the end of the school year.
