The NSW Government continues its efforts to enhance education outcomes across the state, unveiling a redesigned primary school curriculum aimed at providing clear, evidence-based, and carefully sequenced education for students.

The revamped curriculum places a stronger emphasis on essential knowledge and offers clearer guidance to teachers regarding the learning expectations for all students. Developed simultaneously for all NSW primary school syllabuses for the first time in half a century, the new curriculum also enhances connections between different subjects, enabling children to better apply their learning across disciplines.

Today marks the release of updated syllabuses for Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE), Creative Arts, Human Society and its Environment (HSIE), and Science and Technology to teachers, following the earlier introduction of revised Maths and English syllabuses into classrooms this year.

The integrated approach to teaching and learning ensures that students acquire new concepts, information, and skills in a logical sequence, with ample opportunities to apply them practically. For instance, students will learn about graphs in mathematics and then apply graphing skills in subjects like geography and science.

These curriculum changes have garnered broad support from teachers, parents, and educational sectors, reflecting inputs gathered through two rounds of public consultation. Responding to feedback that the initial implementation timeline was impractical, the NSW Government adjusted the schedule. Teachers now have a two-year period to familiarize themselves with the updated syllabus before its mandatory adoption across all NSW schools on the first day of term one in 2027. Schools have the option to adopt the revised curriculum earlier if they choose.

A significant innovation in the new syllabus is the introduction of Human Society and its Environment (HSIE), which amalgamates History and Geography into a single subject. This integrated approach explores key themes across local, national, and global contexts, fostering interconnected learning experiences.
