Key Background:

Dalhousie University is set to expand its leadership programs significantly thanks to a generous $3.5-million investment from the McCall MacBain Foundation. Announced at the annual Dalhousie Student Leadership Conference this donation will further strengthen the Dalhousie Student Leadership Academy (SLA), which aims to equip students with the skills, confidence, and networks to lead effectively within their communities and beyond.

The McCall MacBain Foundation’s founders, John and Marcy McCall MacBain, emphasized the importance of leadership in inspiring change and building a better future. They expressed their pride in supporting Dalhousie’s SLA, which provides students with the tools, experience, and motivation to make a positive impact through their achievements. This investment will introduce ten new entrance scholarships for incoming students demonstrating leadership potential, as well as the Dalhousie-McCall MacBain Leadership Academy Scholarship for high-performing student leaders. These initiatives will offer financial support, mentorship, and unique opportunities to cultivate leadership skills.

The McCall MacBain Foundation, known for its commitment to advancing education, climate solutions, and health, has invested over $500 million in initiatives that foster lasting positive change. This includes the renowned McCall MacBain Scholarships at McGill University, which has benefitted several Dalhousie students and alumni.

Dr. Rick Ezekiel, Vice-Provost of Student Affairs, highlighted the importance of leadership in fostering a vibrant university community. He expressed gratitude for the McCall MacBain Foundation’s investment, which will help Dalhousie expand its leadership programs and provide students from all disciplines and backgrounds with access to high-quality training. Dalhousie President Kim Brooks underscored how this generous support aligns with the university’s commitment to student success, empowering students to develop their leadership potential and effect positive change in their fields.

The SLA offers hands-on learning experiences, mentorship, and real-world applications of leadership. Students engage in workshops, coaching, and the annual Student Leadership Conference, gaining valuable skills that prepare them for leadership roles in the future.
