On Wednesday, at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, the Nobel prize 2022 was distributed, wherein K Berry Sharpless, Morten Meldal, and Carolyn R Bertozzi were awarded for the development of click chemistry and bio-orthogonal chemistry.
Click Chemistry was formed for molecular building blocks to snap together quickly and efficiently, and the foundation was laid by Sharpless and Meldal.
Click chemistry has also been utilized in developing pharmaceuticals, mapping DNA and creating materials that match more for the purpose of the foundation. While using bio-orthogonal reactions, the researchers have enhanced the targeting of cancer pharmaceuticals.
Meanwhile, Bertozzi has moved click chemistry to a new dimension and started using it in living organisms. Without disrupting the normal chemistry of the cell, her bio-orthogonal reactions took place.
