The BC Common First Year Engineering Curriculum agreement expands opportunities and accessibility for aspiring engineers.

Key Background:

Camosun College has announced an exciting expansion to its Engineering Transfer program, creating new opportunities for students wishing to pursue engineering degrees at universities across British Columbia. Under a new agreement, students completing the program will now be able to transfer to six universities offering engineering degree programs, significantly broadening their academic and professional horizons.

Previously, the program prepared students exclusively for transfer to the University of Victoria (UVic), where they could enter the second year of a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Software Engineering program. However, with the signing of the BC Common First Year Engineering Curriculum (BC CFYEC) agreement, which is backed by all six receiving universities and 14 sending institutions in the province, Camosun students will now have access to transfer opportunities at Simon Fraser University, Thompson Rivers University, the University of British Columbia (both Vancouver and Okanagan campuses), and the University of Northern British Columbia.

The Camosun Engineering Transfer program equips students with a foundational understanding of engineering mechanics, project design, as well as first-year science and English courses. With the new BC CFYEC agreement, students can choose a transfer path that aligns better with their academic and professional interests. This development is particularly beneficial for students interested in engineering fields that may not be available at UVic.

Susan Chen, Faculty Lead of the Engineering Transfer program, noted that while 95% of students currently transfer to UVic, the new agreement offers greater flexibility for those pursuing specialized programs or preferring other institutions. “This is a significant step forward for our future students, as it will expand their options and improve accessibility,” she said. The agreement will officially take effect for students enrolling in the Engineering Transfer program in September 2025, offering a broader array of academic pathways and improving access to engineering education across the province.
