Austin Public Schools announced on November 1st that the school’s More Than Pink program, which empowers girls, has won a regional award from the Minnesota Community Education Association. The announcement was made in relation to the school’s More Than Pink program.

During a six-week summer program, girls who have completed grades three through six are empowered by the More Than Pink curriculum.

Austin Public Schools states that the mission of More Than Pink is to inspire young girls to “be true to themselves” by providing them with community support as they grow and develop.

The curriculum includes “group time,” a subject talk lesson, and an hour of physical activity to prepare participants for a 5K run. Subjects covered include puberty, peer pressure, body image, and self-worth. All of the discussions are led by local female role models.

Community Education Director Jen Lawhead states, “More Than Pink has been an inspiring program in Austin for many years and has impacted hundreds of young women in our community.” “The program’s inventor and biggest supporter is our Community Education Coordinator, Teri Wermager, who brought it to Austin. We express our gratitude to the numerous remarkable women from the Austin community who have generously donated their time and skills to serve as fitness leaders and guest speakers for this program.

Located in southeast Minnesota, Austin Public Schools is a public school system that employs more than 800 teacher members and serves about 5200 students. All kids receive a rich educational experience from APS.  The district takes great pleasure in its solid relationships with the community.
