Murmu became the country’s first tribal and the second woman to get elected to the post of President.

As Droupadi Murmu took the oath of President from Chief Justice NV Ramana on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described her oath-taking as a watershed moment for the country, especially for the poor and the downtrodden people.

Addressing the nation after taking the oath, President Murmu talked about her journey from a small tribal village in Odisha to the Rashtrapati Bhavan. She also solicited four tribal revolutions against the British East India Company that she spoke had empowered the tribal contribution to the freedom struggle.

Droupadi started her speech in Hindi with Johar, a traditional tribal greeting, followed by Namaskar, who said, “I attained the post of President is not my achievement. It is the achievement of every poor person in India. My election is proof of the fact that the poor in India can have dreams and fulfill them too.”
